Benefits of Using Capitec Internet Banking App for Transfers, Payments and More

The bank's app, online banking and USSD service for customers without smartphones have been offline since Thursday morning. The bank's customers aired their frustration on social media, and Capitec remained the number one trending topic on SA's Twitterverse by Friday morning.

"Capitec Bank is still experiencing an infrastructure problem in the central servers that support our banking channels. We realise this is a terrible experience for our clients and apologise for the inconvenience," said the bank in a short statement.

Over the past two years, South African banking clients have seen repeated bank outages. Absa and FNB clients have been affected, with Standard Bank suffering such severe outages that it was forced to hold a media briefing to apologise. Its chief engineering officer resigned shortly after that.

The bank is one of the largest in the country and its mobile banking app is incredibly popular, having reached the number 1 spot on both the South African Google Play and Apple app store charts in 2020.

Capitec Bank apologized to its customers via Twitter and SMS on Thursday morning for any inconveniences caused by ongoing outage issues affecting its mobile and online banking app, as well as other digital services including ATM and card payment usage.

#capitec has been trending on Twitter since Thursday morning. As it stands, it is currently the number one trending topic in South Africa as exasperated customers have been expressing their annoyance in classic South African humour.

@Nkosinathi_Gee @PrinceKaybee_SA I have been to Standard Bank, Capitec and ABSA... however FNB seems to be the best option in terms of their products and pricing. 99% of the time I use FNB app and online banking for my transactions. I hardly go to the branch unless I have no choice. their service is better...

@skybookings @MusiqWorks @OskidoIBelieve Yes, online payments have been an issue, especially koKasi. We accept manual payments like EFT. And capitec cards work on our system. Which method of payment do you prefer?

@SibsDJ @pallnandi @StandardBank had the worst outage when their ATMS were down and POS for couple of days. @capitec also had few outages that caused a serious stir. As for service they worse@FNBSA had serious few hours outages with major impact to business and consumer.

The simpler means of attack is by spoofing an existing banking app. A malware author creates a perfect replica of a bank's app and uploads it to third-party websites. Once you've downloaded the app, you enter your username and password into it, which is then sent to the hacker.

The sneakier version is the mobile banking Trojan. These aren't disguised as a bank's official app; they're usually a completely unrelated app with a Trojan installed within. When you install this app, the Trojan begins to scan your phone for banking apps.

When it detects the user launching a banking app, the malware quickly puts up a window that looks identical to the app you just booted up. If this is done smoothly enough, the user won't notice the swap and will enter their details into the fake login page. These details are then uploaded to the malware author.

Finally, never install banking apps from third-party sites, as they're more likely to contain malware. While official app stores are by no means perfect, they're a lot safer than a random website on the internet.

Internet banking is convenient for both customers and hackers alike. Thankfully, you can do your part to ensure you're not a victim of these attacks. By keeping your details safe, you'll give hackers very little to work with when they take aim at your savings.

Now you know the tricky tactics hackers use to crack open your bank account, why not take your banking security to the next level? From changing your password frequently to just checking your statement every month, there are plenty of ways you can keep your finances secure from hackers.

The Ozow facility with Capitec is almost the same as other banks, except here you need to have a Capitec Banking app. This is because you will not be receiving an OTP, but confirming on your Capitec app that you are remotely accessing your banking account. Here is the method.
